My Reflection
by Yu Hsiang "Shaun" Chung

This is my first time visiting galleries in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. I like both Jessica Mein and Marie Losier's exhibitions because they show different sides of time based media.

Jessica's exhibition is in Simon Preston Gallery. I like the space of Simon Preston Gallery because it has more room to breathe. Jessica's work is very labor-intensive, and the result indeed shows her hard work. Jessica uses drawing and videos together. I think it is a great idea to combine what you love together in your art pieces. The videos look like handmade animations. It's very creative.

Marie's exhibition is in Luxe Gallery. The gallery is rather small, but it has a cozy feeling to it. Maire's work is also very labor-intensive, but in a different way. She spent 4 years to "document" Genesis P-Orridge. And this exhibition is the "outtakes" of Marie's upcoming film, "The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye". I like her Peephole boxes a lot because seeing a tiny video is always very interesting to me.

I am very glad that we have this chance to visit these galleries. This is a great experience to me because it introduces me to the galleries of Lower East Side. As an International Student in New York City, I am always amazed by what the big apple could offer. I think both Jessica and Marie's works also give me some ideas about how I want to do my future projects in the class, especially combining what I love together with the media video and audio. I don't have a clear idea about what I want to do yet, but this experience definitely guide me and show me a different way about how to approach my future projects. And I will definitely go back to Lower East Side and see more exhibitions in the near future.

At first thank you for the tour and to have the chance to meet the artists.

I liked the work of Jessica Mein a lot. I liked the fact that she came from a painting background and that she now uses time based media to form her ideas into the fourth dimension. You could see at the exhibition that she did not come from a filming background but she uses film as a tool. Her picuters really did fit into the exhibition. The repeating element of the interlace stripes was an interessting idea.

I did not really understand the work of Marie at the Luxe Gallery. For me she appeared more like a documentalist. The figure of Genesis P-Orridge is just such a big and loud personality itself that I really could not see where her work started or how big her part was. The photographs were good and I liked the different usage of material to project the movie.

i didn't know any of the two galleries, i am not to familiar with lower east side galleries, it was really nice to go out to see some exhibitions
+ it was great that both of the artists appeared, it is always very different to see them and hear them talking about their work and intentions
i did like Jessica`s videos, mostly the newest one, especially how the shade become partial background on the street while rolling up, and how elaborate it was
i am not sure what to think about Marie`s show, i didn't completely understood, i think even though it was clearer when she explained i still couldn't quite connect with it on what is it (i like most the little hole to view the little movie and the playbox),

Now I see where to post. Alright.
Some of my thoughts on Jessica Mein's work is under her comments area.

As far as Marie's work. When I first stepped into the gallery I just didn't know. I was confused and a bit intrigued. I didn't know who Genesis was, so her name and history neither distracted nor clarified for me. I think I thought about the idea of character-making, which really interests me, but because I did not know who Genesis was and felt as though I should, I was confused.
I think it was really great that she was able to come and talk about it because I found out where she was coming from and how she got there. And I find her way of creating and collaborating very honest and refreshing. I was able to go to her film showings at the fi:af and feel as though I should now go back to the gallery because what is at the luxe is only a taste of what she does and how she does. I think she's a really exciting artist.
love,
eleanore.

Ms meins work really blew my mind. It opened up what i had not realized were pretty narrow conceptions of video art. I like art that make sit apparent how much work it took to make it. Hers does so while remaining very exciting and challenging.

I forget maries last name. I am really curious what she gains from the work. Her exhibition is about their friendship and I wonder where she stands in that regard.
I liked the b and w films, they reminded me of Guy MAddin "saddest music in the world". I think her fantastic sensibilities really stood out more than she does in the Luxe. I dont mean that as a negative or anything, b/c she really has chops.

I currently volunteer at the Cuchifritos gallery in the Essex st. Market, so I have tried to visit some of the other galleries in the neighborhood before.

Jessica Mein's name was new to me, however he work was not. As I read about it and learned she was from Sao Paolo I immediately thought of a video piece that is currently on view at MoMA. When I learned it was her work we would be seeing, I found it intriguing that it carried such a presence of her ''home''. Her obsession with creating these works is definitely inspiring. I'm drawn to collage work and loved how she gave the medium even more life. Works on paper along with video, gave insight into the working process, and what the definition of a "time based" artist could be.

This merging of media also continued at the Luxe Gallery where we experienced the work of Marie Losier. As a photographer, I was immediately drawn to her portraits of Genesis. I am not familiar with who she is, and she has worked in a way that makes Genesis' person accessible to the viewer. She also shares the same obsession as Mein, however hers is with the moving image. Unlike Mein, Losier has allowed her video screens to become their own objects that allow the viewer to interact with them. I particularly enjoyed the video piece of Genesis swimming that was placed on a tripod like structure. It gave a great amount of dimension to an otherwise flat surface.

It's not often one gets to meet the makers of the art they experience, and I had a fun time being able to speak with Mein and Losier. The fact that these two ladies are both recent graduates was also a plus. Finding places to show my work is really important to me, and it must feel great to have those first experiences being able to exhibit at a museum, gallery, or solo show.
